So I know that all you folks out there hate Twilight and ZOMG ew ew vampires shouldn’t sparkle or be distinctly feminine fantasies (Oh yeah and it is abusive and fucked up too.) Personally I think all the Twilight hate and the 50 shades hate comes from that place us women have been dealing with since we were girls. Namely, the attitude of what girls like is dumb/not serious/unimportant/lesser. Blade and Underworld are just as cheesy why does no one hate them with the vitriol reserved for Twilight? Twilight is hated so vehemently because it is a female fantasy that writes men in the way us women get written in to the usual male-centric fantasy.
My fellow feminists, I get how problematic these fantasies are. We know how fucked up our culture is when it comes to women. Are you honestly surprised?
The end of the Twilight novels involves an extremely well crafted social combat that results in one person dying and that death is horrible and done by the bad guys to incite the good guys to violence. Put that in conversation with pretty much any other movie in which supernatural creatures go into conflict and think about what the good guys do. They go to war and lay waste to them who have so wronged them.
In the Twilight movie the end involves a lot more death. We are treated to a vision of an alternative future. A future in which the bad guys and good guys fight. It is not pretty. Not only is it not pretty it gets a massive amount of screen time. Heads are popped off all over the place. Seriously at the climax of the movie I witnessed about 6-10 decapitations.
I’m thinking about this…about what it means. That the movie folks can’t figure out how to wrap up a good story without a ton of VIOLENT in our faces conflict. Say what you will about Stephanie Meyer (I’ll probably agree). At least she can do that.
Quentin Tarentino’s movies are an excuse to make violence beautiful. He does what he does well but all he is doing at this point is looking for people or groups that are okay to murder in cinematic fashion. Nazi’s…Slave owners…an abusive ex. Hey yeah they are revenge fantasies and it’s kinda cool and pretty but can we stop giving them more societal weight than Twilight? No, I’m not arguing that Twilight should get more weight than Djago. Seriously, our culture needs to stop thinking violence is Soooo awesome and important and get some conflict resolution skills.
In one of my classes I overheard a fellow student. Let’s call him Military Guy. he was talking about the professor. Military Guy thought it was funny how serious she took education. He said something about how being on the battle field in Afghanistan was really serious. Now maybe he meant that after facing a life-threatening situation nothing in school was hard. Or perhaps he meant that educating 125-150 people a year matters less than shooting at people and getting shot at.
Can we stop glorifying that lawless place where right and wrong is decided by who has the better gun and the whitest hat? Every movie and every award builds our world. If we keep making blood soaked bricks is it any wonder that our nostrils will be filled with the scent of blood?
