The Ms. is a nerd a huge giant nerd. The kind of nerd that not only plays Dungeons and Dragons but writes campaigns for them. So imagine the Ms.’ delight when she saw this from the art director over at Wizards.
Sexism in Fantasy: The Dragon’s Eye View.
So here is what I told him:
I think instead of an equal number of male and female depictions an equal number of male gaze oriented vs. female gaze oriented ones would be better. There is a wonderful LJ community dedicated to exploring the female gaze and it has some really great stuff check it out!
Aside from the equality of eye candy I’d love it if you guys can make archetypes for us. Like okay in comic book art for example male characters are an idealized form of what men want to be and women are an idealized form of what men want to *ahem* enjoy.
Us women rarely get to see ourselves in fantasty art, we get to see this distorted creature that men want.
Also, WHY DOES MY DRAGON BORN CHARACTER HAVE MAMMARY GLANDS? SHE’s a goram dragon person. I was so pissed when I found out she had bewbs.
Finally if you want to be inclusive don’t just think straight men and women.
Thanks so much for actually thinking about stuff like this.
What about you? What do you think he needs to know as he goes about setting the art direction for the next edition of Dungeons and Dragons.
